WHAT ARE BIOSTIMULANTS?
While there is not an agreed upon definition as of yet, the 2018 Farm Bill described a biostimulant as a “substance or microorganism that, when applied to seeds, plants, or on the rhizosphere, stimulates natural processes to enhance or benefit nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress, or crop quality and yield.”

These natural components collect together as a result of the decomposition of plant, animal, and microbial residues. Humic acids have a higher molecular weight and carbon content, and are darker in color than their counterpart, fulvic acids. Together with the other biostimulants, humic substances work to release essential nutrients such as Ca, Mg, K, and others to create a soil microbial biomass for fighting diseases.
Beneficial Bacteria
There are three different types of beneficial bacteria: free-living bacteria located around the root, bacteria that colonize the root surface, and bacteria that live within the roots. Each of these work together to promote plant growth by repairing nitrogen levels, reduce the growth of toxic pathogens, and increase plant resistance to insects and harmful bacterial pathogens.
Beneficial Fungi
Plant-beneficial fungi are a core component of biostimulant activity. By helping to extend the root system beyond the depletion zone, different types of fungi allow for enhanced uptake of nutrients and water. This not only increases a plant’s tolerance to drought stress, but in turn, improves soil aeration – expanding the water-holding capacity and symbiotic life process.
